A couple of months ago, we wrote about under-the-radar movies and you DELIVERED. (Plus one! Goodbye Lenin! the place Beyond the Pines!) So today I’d love to ask: What are your under-the-radar favorites? television shows?

someone somewhere tv show

Somebody Somewhere, if you haven’t seen it yet, is a love story between two platonic friends (played by Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller) in Manhattan, Kansas. I love how the Midwestern characters are smart, funny, and nuanced, not just folksy and wholesome.

Up here Aisling Bea

This Way Up, written by Irish comedian Aisling Bea and co-starring our best friend Sharon Horgan, portrays depression in a way that I personally found very real. I highly recommend watching it if you loved Catastrophe and Fleabag.

PEN15 television program

Have you seen PEN15? Anna Konkle (whose the memoirs just came out) and Maya Erskine play 13-year-old versions of themselves, and they’re beyond hilarious. “We had a conversation about what the most rejected, awkward, funny, sad, messed up moment is, and it all came back to high school.” Konkle said. Don’t miss the animated episode about going to Florida with Anna’s dad and falling in love with two guys at the hotel. It felt JUST LIKE the road trips my family took in Florida when I was in high school. How exciting! How humid! 21 hour drive from Michigan!

the afterparty tv show zoe aniq

Finally, in The after partyA man mysteriously dies during the party after a high school reunion and a detective comes to investigate. He asks each party guest to describe their “mental movie” of the night, and each episode follows a single character’s response. Depending on your perspective, each episode becomes a different genre: one is a romantic comedy, another is an action movie, and a third is a musical. I laughed a lot; What a clever conceit!

What TV shows do you think are underrated? Last night I started the second season of sisterswhich has been great; and me too In fact I enjoyed Mo, which stars Mo Amer as a Palestinian refugee in Houston trying to find work and love, while seeking asylum with his mother and siblings. xoxo
