volkswagen has announced a significant strategic shift in its North American operations by end production of ID.4 electric SUV at its Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. This decision marks a shift from the company’s previous aggressive electrification goals toward high-volume internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, specifically focusing on the upcoming second generation. The discontinuation of production of the ID.4 reflects broader trends in the automotive industrywhere traditional Manufacturers are recalibrating their electric vehicle (EV) ambitions. Several factors contributed to this move, including lower-than-expected consumer demand for electric vehicles and the loss of the $7,500 federal tax credit last year, significantly affecting the price competitiveness of high-end electric models. Market data indicates that price-sensitive American consumers increasingly prefer used electric vehicles or new, more affordable alternatives.
The ID.4 experienced a volatile business trajectory in the US market since its debut in 2020. While it peaked at 37,000 units sold in 2023, sales plummeted 55% the following year. Despite a 31% recovery in 2025 with 22,373 units sold, the volume remained insufficient to sustain local production. By contrast, Volkswagen’s global electric vehicle deliveries remained relatively stable in 2025, showing only a marginal decline of 0.2% with 382,000 units sold.
Regarding the workforce, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Kjell Gruner emphasized that the Chattanooga facility remains a “cornerstone” of the brand’s U.S. strategy. Employees previously dedicated to the ID.4 line will transition to production of the new gasoline-powered Atlas, scheduled to begin this summer. Additionally, the company offers early retirement packages to eligible staff.
While the ID.4 will remain available in dealerships until current inventories are depleted (estimated to last until 2027), Volkswagen has not permanently abandoned the model. The company suggested that a future version of the ID.4 could eventually return to the US market, provided it can be manufactured at a more affordable price for US consumers. However, no specific timeline has been established for this reintroduction.
