We have tragic news to report from the world of sports.
Jayden Adams, the South African soccer star who recently led his team to a dramatic victory against South Korea in the World Cup, has died.
He was barely 25 years old.
News of his death comes courtesy of a statement from the South African Footballers’ Union.
“The South African Footballers’ Union is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams,” the SAFPU said in a statement on Saturday.
“Jayden had recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the nation’s hopes with pride, courage and distinction.
“His passing is an immeasurable loss for his family, his teammates, his clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large.”
Adams played for Mamelodi Sundowns after beginning his professional career with Stellenbosch FC, where he became the first graduate of the club’s academy to sign a professional contract.
He debuted for the South African national team in 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the country’s rising talents.
During the 2026 World Cup, Adams appeared in South Africa’s group stage matches and helped the team reach the knockout rounds for the first time in the nation’s history before their eventual elimination.
His trip to the World Cup came amid personal tragedy.
Just one day before South Africa’s group stage match against the Czech Republic, Adams’ grandmother died.
Even while grieving, he decided to play for his country, earning widespread admiration for his resilience.

Adams’ cause of death is unknown at this time.
“The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” Western Cape police spokesperson FC Van Wyk said. Yahoo Sports via email.
On social media, fans and friends are mourning the loss of a promising talent and a beloved young man.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents,” South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said in a statement on Saturday.
“Our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of fans who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect to a full-fledged Bafana Bafana international.”
