The completed arrivals area features a new U-shaped baggage claim carousel as well as a Tasmanian-designed open-air concourse. According to Hobart Airport CEO Norris Carter, the airport terminal expansion is now two-thirds complete and new departure gates opened earlier this year.

“Ultimately, the project will double the size of the terminal, providing more space, more food and retail options, and more jobs for Tasmanians. The opening of our newcomer area is an exciting time for Tasmania as the terminal expands to meet growing demand,” he said.
“It features more baggage claim space, a newcomer exit with easier access to the new car rental offices and a welcoming open-air concourse inspired by Tasmania’s unique landscape.
“As part of the works, an existing baggage carousel was taken offline to upgrade and extend, while the new 85 meter U-belt carousel is designed to improve flow and support increased passenger numbers during the busy school holiday period.
“The outdoor patio has been designed by Tasmanian landscape architects Playstreet and draws inspiration from Tasmania’s natural environment to create a distinctly local welcome for visitors coming to the state.”
According to Miriam Shevland, the esplanade is “designed as a welcoming journey through the Tasmanian landscapes”.
“In the rainforest area, the pots are dimly lit to subtly evoke bioluminescence, adding depth and atmosphere after dark,” he said.
“The movement of different types of pavement helps guide people through the space, but overall the design is more than wayfinding – it aims to reflect Tasmania’s rugged coastlines and natural environments, and create a calm and welcoming arrival experience that connects visitors to Tasmania from the moment they land.”
Hobart Airport’s master plan includes $200 million to modernize its terminal. The current terminal was designed for 1.5 million passengers per year and currently handles around 3 million, with forecasts of 3.5 million by 2030.
Work has also included a $130 million runway overhaul that was completed last year, which will allow it to handle larger aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
Previous works completed in 2018 extended the main runway to 2,727 m, allowing larger aircraft to and from Asia-Pacific and Antarctica, for $40 million.
The upgrades are expected to be complete in early 2027.
