The Sun enters sidereal Cancer on Thursday, July 16: the natural house of home, family and the deep waters of feelings. This is the sign of mother, home, and the healing that comes from belonging somewhere.
But this year brings with it something I haven’t seen in a long time. The Sun is entering a house already occupied by an exalted Jupiter.
Jupiter has been in Cancer since early June, located in your most powerful sign of the zodiac. When the Sun follows on July 16, the two great luminaries of heaven share the same home: the Atman and the Guru, side by side, in the Guru’s own sign. That is a rare kind of grace.
This is also the beginning of Dakshinayana, the six-month period in which the Sun moves south of the equator, the days become shorter, and the emphasis of life shifts from external achievement to internal cultivation. Vedic tradition considers this period more auspicious for spiritual practice than for new ventures. It is the season of the Guru. That this Sun in Cancer coincides with exalted Jupiter is a sign that the sky does not send often.
Sun in Punarvasu (Cancer 0-3.20): July 16-20
Punarvasu means “return of the light” or “becoming good again.” The Sun passes through these first degrees of Cancer in the first four days of the transit. With Jupiter nearby, there is a sense of returning to something essential: a relationship, a practice, a sense of home within oneself. It’s a good time to renew what matters.
Sun in Pushya (Cancer 3.20-4.40pm): July 20 – August 3
Pushya is ruled by Brihaspati, the priest of the gods, the same energy as Jupiter himself. For the Sun to pass through Pushya while Jupiter is already residing, the Guru principle must be amplified with all its force. Brihaspati grants good luck, good fortune and love for spiritual teaching. It brings blessings to children and those who give generously.
The Sun, however, does not do its best work in Pushya. This is a nakshatra ruled by Saturn, and when the Sun passes through it there is a risk of getting caught up in material concerns and losing sight of the larger spiritual mission. Use this as a reminder to return to your practices, your meditation, your deeper purpose.
July 23rd brings good news: Mercury’s seasons are heading, ending the retrograde that began on June 29th. The fog and miscommunications begin to lift. Wait a few days for things to calm down completely, but the direction has changed.
July 29 is the peak of the month. The Sun and Jupiter reach an exact conjunction in Pushya nakshatra, creating what tradition calls Guru Pushya yoga, considered one of the most auspicious days of the year, a day when the blessings of the teacher and the light of consciousness arrive together. Spend time in prayer, with your guru, or studying. Everything you start or dedicate to that day has extra weight.
Sun in Ashlesha (Cancer 16.40-29.59): August 3-16
Ashlesha is ruled by the Nagas, the serpent beings of Vedic mythology, and is connected to Lord Vishnu. This nakshatra carries deep hidden wisdom and, in transit, can provide a profound spiritual experience to those who are open to it. Mercury’s rule in this constellation brings intellectual depth: questions about the nature of karma, the workings of time, the purpose of what we carry. Stay close to your teacher during this passage.
Cancer Gandanta (August 14-16)
The last days of the transit pass through the gandanta of Cancer, the area from 27 to 30 degrees of Cancer, at the crossroads between water and fire. This is where old emotional patterns that have been building throughout the month can emerge in an avalanche of knots. Deep unconscious material and long-held regrets can be overwhelming. But remember: you have the power of free will in the present moment to move forward into a new light. You don’t have to live in the shadows and mistakes of the past. Let them go. They seem tangled and difficult to handle, but you are strong enough to overcome them.
By ascending sign
For Leo rising: Cancer is your 12th house, so this transit directs attention inward: spending, subconscious processing, withdrawal. Traveling to foreign places can be unexpectedly fruitful. This is an excellent month for inner work and meditation.
For Pisces ascendant: Cancer is your fifth house, where spiritual practices and initiations bear fruit. This is one of the best solar transits of the year for you.
For Scorpio rising: Cancer is your ninth house of Guru and higher learning. Guru Pushya yoga on July 29 has a particular significance.
Transits are 20% of the time; everything is contextual to the larger cycles you are running. For guidance on how this transit interacts with your personal chart and dasha, a consultation may be helpful.
