“Would you ever consider an update on Monday?” a reader named Molly commented a while ago. “It could complement the ‘Have a nice weekend’ posts. I’m always curious to know how the party went, what dress you chose, how the movie was, etc.” I’ve done a few weekend recaps since then, and here’s another one, and please share yours in the comments…

Teenage girl driving Brooklyn

Longtime readers may be as surprised as I am that Toby is LEARNING TO DRIVE. Time flies! We’ve been taking our old VW to empty parking lots so it can get used to accelerating, braking, turning, parking, and giving me a heart attack from time to time.

Also, on a walk through Manhattan, I met a cat bookstore in the Eastern Town. I took a photo for my cat-loving niece, along with a promise to take her there next time she visits.

On Saturday we went to a dear family friend’s bar mitzvah, which was an absolute joy from start to finish. He did an incredible job standing in front of a synagogue full of 12 and 13 year olds (the most demanding audience) and sharing his interpretation of the Torah.

Afterwards we sang, danced, ate pizza and played arcade games…

…but tweens were probably more fascinated by the self-cleaning toilet across the street. It was a discreet illness, as they say.

I was also moved by this congratulatory note from the boy’s uncles. What a wise and beautiful feeling to hear at 13 years old.

Also, over the past week, I photographed people in Brooklyn to a street style edition of Big Salad (free for everyone)…

…So I laughed when I ran into a stranger this weekend and realized we were dressed exactly the same.

Finally, the kids and I are celebrating Mother’s Day tonight (since they were with their dad yesterday) and we might watch the movie. The Sheep Detectives – We continue to hear excellent reviews. “In the 1980s and 1990s, movie studios routinely released PG-rated family movies that actually lived up to that rating: They were intended for viewing by the whole family, with parental guidance,” wrote Alissa Wilkinson in The New York Times. “Mature themes (death, divorce and other darker elements of life) could be mixed into a lighter comedy. They were not children’s films that adults could stomach, but were intended for audiences of different ages.” Have you seen it?

So! What were you doing this weekend? Walks? Books? Frozen? I’d love to hear the ups, downs, anything you want to share. xoxxoxo

PS: There are many fun things. Are you religious?
