The Toffees host the Reds in the first Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with just five points separating the teams in eighth and fifth place respectively.

Everton are level on points with seventh-placed Brentford, with whom they drew 2-2 last weekend, while they are just one point behind Chelsea in the Europa League position.

Moyes insisted Everton will do everything they can to move up the table but will be careful not to let the teams behind them get close.

Only three points separate sixth-placed Chelsea from eleventh-placed Bournemouth.

“All we can do is try to catch whoever is above us,” Moyes said.

“I think Brentford are ahead of us at the moment so we have to try and get whoever we can.

“But probably the most important thing is to make sure that no one catches us, because if we stay in a strong position then we will have a chance to achieve something in relation to Europe, maybe not, but we have to try to make sure we defend ourselves against all the other teams as well.

“I think the most important thing for me is that we have six games left, that we have something to play for here.

“I hope we can move forward and keep that dream alive. Let’s see what happens.”

Everton have won their last two Premier League home games and are looking to win three in a row at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time in what will be their 17th game there.

Liverpool are in poor form, with one win in their last five games in all competitions (L4), but Moyes said he is not thinking much about the Reds’ recent results.

“I don’t really follow Liverpool’s results,” Moyes added.

“I don’t really have much to do with it. I look after Everton. My job is to see that we try and do the best we can.”

“We had a good point at Brentford, considering where they are, and they are in a similar position to us.

“I can just focus on us and we can keep it up.”
