Iranian gunboats fire on oil tanker in Strait of Hormuz as Tehran reimposes restrictions – National

A second ship was reported hit by a projectile and others changed course as Iran reimposes restrictions on the vital waterway.

The British military says two gunboats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard opened fire on a tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz after Iran said it had reimposed restrictions on the vital waterway.

The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations center said an unknown projectile hit the ship, 46 kilometers (25 nautical miles) northeast of Oman.

Some containers on the ship were damaged, he added.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations Center said the tanker and crew were safe, without identifying the ship or its destination.


Iran previously said it was reimposing restrictions in the strait in response to the US blockade of Iranian shipping and ports.

Iran has prevented ships from crossing during the seven weeks of war, except those it authorizes.
