Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada says the club is in a “good place” to win the Premier League next season or the season after.
Berrada targeted the club’s 21st Premier League title by 2028 when he was appointed in 2023, when it will be its 150th anniversary.
A strong end to the season, following the arrival of Michael Carrick mid-season, saw the Red Devils finish third in the Premier League and secure a return to the Champions League and the club boss believes their first league title since 2013 is now within reach.
“The ideal would be to do it next season, and if not, the next one. I think we are in a good place,” he said in Inside Manchester United.
“We are going to continue investing in different areas of the club. There are other objectives off the field that we would like to achieve as well.
“One of them is to be financially sustainable, to introduce commercial innovation into the club.”
Berrada: “We want Bruno to stay”
Berrada insisted United plan to retain captain Bruno Fernandes after an excellent season in which he won the FWA Player of the Season award and broke the Premier League record for most assists in a single season with 21.
“I think Bruno we have a fantastic captain. Absolutely fantastic,” Berrada added.
When asked if he wanted him to stay at the club, the United boss said:
“We would like him to stay. Of course we do. He has had a great season on the field and, more importantly, I think he has shown everyone that he is a great leader.
“People don’t see what he does off the field and he deserves a lot of credit.”
Last summer’s transfer strategy will continue
On the subject of their transfer plans this summer, Berrada said Man Utd would continue with the strategy laid out last summer, which saw them bring in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
“The model of what we did last summer will be replicated,” he added.
“You never know how you’re going to get out of a window. You have to be really prepared, you have to have a clear plan, you have to know what positions you want to strengthen and you also have to be prepared for any eventuality.”
“There could be departures that you didn’t expect or opportunities that weren’t there at the beginning of the window. We have to be agile and flexible.
“We have a clear plan. [Director of football] Jason Wilcox and his team are well prepared to execute that plan.
“What we saw last season is a good path forward for us.
“We want a mix of experience and youth. A mix of players who have shown they can perform in the Premier League and players who are doing very well outside of the Premier League.
“Any decision we make will not just be short-term but long-term.”
