With JJ Gabriel getting closer to making his Premier League debut for Manchester United, head coach Michael Carrick explained why the 15-year-old was promoted surprisingly early.
Having included Gabriel in first-team training since his appointment in January, Carrick says the striker has done “very well”.
“JJ is a great talent,” Carrick acknowledged. “We obviously think a lot about him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with it and working with him in development.”

JJ Gabriel stats: Why Manchester United are keen on the striker
In his first season as a starter in the Under-18 Premier League, Gabriel scored his 21st goal in 23 appearances in all competitions in a victory over title rivals Manchester City on 21 March.
He scored hat-tricks against Derby County and Liverpool and the goal against City was the seventh consecutive game in all competitions in which Gabriel scored, finding the net 10 times in total during those games and contributing with an assist.
“JJ is a fantastic talent,” U18 head coach Darren Fletcher said via united website. “I have really enjoyed working with him, getting to know him.
“He’s a young guy with great enthusiasm. There’s a lot of noise around him, and rightly so, because he’s a really talented kid.”
When could JJ Gabriel play for Manchester United?
Premier League rules state that players must be 15 years old by August 31 of a season to be part of the campaign’s first team.
Gabriel turned 15 on October 6, so he will not be able to play in the league until the 2026/27 season.
With many of United’s first team players at the World Cup this summer, Gabriel’s chances of playing for the first team during pre-season could increase.
Two standout teenage stars from this Premier League campaign, Arsenal’s Max Dowman and Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha, first caught the attention of most fans when they starred for their clubs during pre-season last year.
Ruben Amorim, who left his position as permanent manager in January, was the first manager to involve Gabriel in the first team and Carrick, who considerably improved United’s form after initially becoming interim head coach until the end of the season, will surely be tempted to give him minutes now that he has landed the job permanently.
The age rules are different for the FA Cup, which led to Fletcher being asked if he was going to give Gabriel a place in his matchday squad ahead of a third round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in January.
“It could be, but it won’t be,” replied Fletcher, who briefly took command between Amorim’s departure and Carrick’s arrival.
“Anyone could be chosen. I’m very excited about his talent, but the most important thing is that he continues to develop.”
“He’s doing fantastically well, but he still has a lot to learn. He’s developing in there, but the world is his oysters and he just needs to continue his journey. His time will come in due time.”
“Right now, I think it’s a little early. A lot of people would agree with me, but I couldn’t say enough about JJ.”
What positions can JJ Gabriel play?
United have used Gabriel in central midfield, attacking midfield, as a centre-forward and on the left wing. “He works hard,” Fletcher said, speaking of Gabriel’s attitude and personal qualities.
“The first thing I say is that he loves football, he loves to train, he loves to play, he loves to have the ball, he loves to express himself.
“He makes fantastic decisions; he just has an enthusiasm for the game that is incredible. A 15-year-old kid with a bright future ahead of him.
“He has an incredible family and incredible support around him, and he is someone we are delighted to have at the club.
“We just hope that he continues to improve, learn every day and continue to be the boy he really is, enjoying playing football, going, expressing himself and scoring many goals so that Manchester United U18 wins every game. Then I will be a happy man.”

Gabriel has won six caps for England at Under-15 level and three at Under-16 level. His first international goal is yet to come.
He was first called up at under-17 level in March 2026 for matches against the Faroe Islands, Israel and Estonia at the St George’s Park training base.
He irish mirror reported that Gabriel was born and raised in the United Kingdom, but is eligible to play for England, Ireland, Cyprus and Trinidad and Tobago through his Irish father, Cypriot mother and Trinidadian grandfather.

Gabriel could follow in the footsteps of players like Ngumoha and Dowman by breaking records at his club.
Ngumoha became the youngest scorer in Reds history with a goal against Newcastle this season when the winger was four days away from turning 17.
Attacking midfielder Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history with a solo goal against Everton at the age of 16 years and 73 days.
At 15 years and 10 months, when the 2026/27 season is scheduled to begin, Gabriel has a little time on his side to become United’s youngest-ever player and almost the entire season to become their youngest player of the modern era.
