Maresca, who resigned as Chelsea manager in December, signed a three-year contract with City to succeed Pep Guardiola.

This will be the 46-year-old’s third role at the club having previously worked as head coach of its Elite Development Squad, winning the Premier League 2 title in 2020-21, before working as part of Guardiola’s coaching staff.

In total, Maresca worked as a senior manager at three clubs prior to City: Parma, Leicester City and Chelsea.

The Italian won 55 of his 92 games in charge of the Blues (D16 L21), winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup before his surprise departure in December 2025.

“Manchester City is a club I know very well and having the opportunity to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me,” Maresca said on the club’s website.

“This will be my third stage here. I know this club, I know the demands and expectations.

“The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability.

“I can’t wait to start training the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City.”

Following Maresca’s departure, Chelsea appointed and sacked Liam Rosenior before appointing Xabi Alonso as their head coach for next season.

The ‘blues’ have also issued a forceful statement in this regard, in which they confirmed that both City and Maresca will pay compensation.

The statement read: “In autumn last year, our former manager informed the club that he might have an opportunity to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season.

“It was clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola and that he was fully committed to taking advantage of the opportunity, even though he had a long-term contract that he had no right to terminate.

“In December 2025, our head coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position. Obviously, we were disappointed because we believed that his head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity, despite having joined Chelsea the year before.

“No club wants to change coaches mid-season. However, given his decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities until the end of the season, the club had no choice but to protect our players, our fans and the Badge and accept his resignation.

“Given the circumstances and taking into account the mutual respect between the clubs, a confidential agreement has been reached with Manchester City, which includes the payment of compensation. A confidential agreement has also been reached with the former manager under which he will pay compensation.”
