What are you doing this weekend? The kids and I are going to play whiffleball in the park and I’m going to see more of DTF San Luis – the first episode was surprisingly compelling. (Thanks to the readers who recommended it!) I hope you have a good one, and here are some links from around the web…

The Real Reason Freddie and I Broke Up. So many people asked! (Large salad, with paywall)

I always love a dinner recipe with toast.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Writing Tips: “She always tries to give a character three things to juggle in any given scene. For example: they’re trying to order a sandwich, the deli is unbearably hot, and they’re trying really hard not to let on that they’re planning to rob the bank down the street in 20 minutes.”

RMS is having an Earth Day sale (rare) so I’m stocking up on the legendary lip2cheek.

Ina Garten shares what ingredients don’t make the “store-buying is fine” cut.

Longing for discomfort. “My dear friend wants to fall in love the old-fashioned way because her parents met looking for the same item at a market in the 1970s, a story she can rarely tell without crying.” (New Yorker)

Other universities have fraternity houses. This one has a cookie house.. (NYTimes giveaway link)

what a pretty dress for summer weddings.

Have you read the new book? Whidbey? I forgot how fascinating thrillers can be.

Should we hug? messy gardens this year?

America is being murdered and it’s an inside job..”

Also, four comments from readers:

Nadine says about camping with kids: “Funny story: On a road trip, my boyfriend and I stopped in Hope National Park, Arkansas. While we were waiting to join a tour, Ranger Kevin convinced us to do the Junior Ranger activity. Keep in mind, we are over 40 and have ZERO kids with us. We obliged, he walked us through the very official swearing-in ceremony and we received our wooden badges. What a treat!”

Ashley says of camping with kids: “The best family travel advice we’ve ever received: Expect that at some point everything will be horrible. There will be a time when everyone will be in a bad mood or completely losing their minds. Waiting for that part makes the entire trip more enjoyable. Now, when it happens, my husband and I look at each other and shrug, ‘This is the horrible part.'” (OK!!!)

Meghan says, of the mint chocolate mousse: “In my youth, I spent many years serving ice cream. One thing I can say is that people who love mint chocolate LOVE mint chocolate. No one was ever as excited to see a flavor on the menu as the mint chocolate people. I found it very endearing.”

Morgan says about moms, what do you always keep in your bag? “As a child, I had health problems that required frequent doctor visits, hospital stays, and a lot of time in waiting rooms. What my mother did to entertain me was let me go through the contents of her purse. Keys! Lipstick! I had a difficult relationship with my mother, but I would give anything for a trip back in time to just look at her purse.”
