West Brom have sacked head coach Eric Ramsay after just 44 days in charge, with the club dangerously close to the Championship relegation zone following Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Charlton.
Ramsay, 34, failed to win a single league game during his brief tenure, collecting just four points from a possible 24 in eight games, a return that ultimately made his position untenable. Assistant head coach Dennis Lawrence also left The Hawthorns.
In a statement, the club said: “West Bromwich Albion have bid farewell to men’s first team coach Eric Ramsay. The club would like to express its gratitude to Eric and Dennis and wish them the best for the future.”
First-team coach James Morrison fills the role on an interim basis for the second time this season, with a daunting trip to Oxford, another relegation battler, on Saturday as his first assignment.
Ramsay inherited a team that was 18th but was still seven points clear of the bottom three when he replaced Ryan Mason. That cushion has been almost completely eroded, and Albion now find themselves just one point above the relegation zone with 12 games remaining.
The patience of the fans ran out some time ago. A 3-0 defeat at Portsmouth infuriated fans, and during Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Coventry the stands echoed with chants of “You’ll be sacked in the morning” and “Eric Ramsay, your football is shit.”
Tuesday’s draw against Charlton, in which a George Campbell header ended a 405-minute goal drought before Lyndon Dykes equalized for the visitors, was the final straw.
Ramsay was defiant in his latest press conference, insisting: “I’m not sitting here after five defeats where the team hasn’t been competitive. In the last four league games, the team has been competitive, they’re fighting and I don’t feel like there’s a lack of connection between me and the team.”
