Waking up with Saturn in Aries

Waking up with Saturn in Aries

Yoga was great this morning. My body needed stretching and the class was one of those hard but good sessions. Thank you Tyler!

I find that a great yoga class is not only helpful in stretching and relaxing my body, but it also gives me mental space to reflect and let my mind wander. Sometimes I leave class and can’t get my hands on the keyboard fast enough. Today was one of those days. (It might also have had something to do with that lovely little aspect of the Moon sextile Mercury.)

It is such a momentous moment astrologically. There are many things that are changing, evolving and changing to become something new.

I’ve been thinking about Saturn’s move into Aries, especially parts of a conversation I had with Britt a few weeks ago.

Saturn leaving Pisces feels like it is waking up.

I know there’s a lot of focus on Saturn entering Aries, and I’ll get to that. But it seems appropriate to look back before rushing forward.

(I previously wrote about Saturn in Aries here if you missed it. And I found myself re-listening to this classic Crowded House tuneDon’t dream that it’s over, while writing this post.)

The stillness and sleep of Saturn in Pisces

I’m thinking about the lazy, slow, stagnant qualities of water signs, and how Saturn in Pisces had a kind of suspended quality. That strange feeling of sinking into a dream or a stage of life and feeling like you’re just there.

For me personally, when Saturn settled in Pisces in March 2023, it was the end of an incredibly hectic 18 months, in which we had an international move and went through a major renovation at home.

When Saturn entered Pisces I didn’t want to do anything, go anywhere or make any more decisions. (If you’ve ever gone through a renovation or relocation, you’ll know exactly what I mean!)

I wanted what Saturn in Pisces had to offer: some stillness, time and space to just be. An absence – or at least a reduction – of doing, managing and hustling more. After months of working on our house, I also wanted peace of mind, which water signs are associated with.

This preference seems even clearer in retrospect, now that Saturn in Pisces is gone. As if that’s what was needed, but it probably isn’t anymore.

Now I’m restless. I wonder what’s next. I am open to movement and change in a way I haven’t been in a long time.

While Saturn was in Pisces, I was reflecting and reflecting deeply.

I tried some things, changed others, and dove deep into healing, but much of life (from the outside looking in) didn’t change. The form, structure and general configuration of life was stable.

Now I’m wondering what kind of shape or structure would be interesting to try. I don’t know if it will still be the best option.

This openness, or feeling of wondering about the movement, seems new and very relevant to Yesaturn in Aries.

Drying with fire signs

Many astrologers, including me, talk about a planet going from a water sign to a fire sign as if it were drying up. As if the planet was shaking off something, reviving itself and gaining clarity and focus.

Perhaps this is something you are also feeling as Saturn undergoes this qualitative shift from water to fire?

You may not know what’s next, but you recognize the need to try, try, see what’s possible.

Maybe, like me, you’re just open to things being different, even if you’re still not sure how, where, or in what way.

Uncertainty through transition

The elements water and fire do not share any qualities. Water is cold and wet, while fire is hot and dry. They are as different as two elements can be.

So of course you are adjusting and feeling bewildered and out of place as a planet as important as Saturn completely changes its expression.

The energy quality of the last three years, with Saturn in Pisces, was slow and still stagnant. It encouraged continuity, as it seemed easier than doing something new or different. It didn’t mean that what you were left with was necessarily good, it was just easier to continue than to try to break new ground.

That vibe has changed.

What you could sail with or sail along the coast you can no longer do.

As you (and everyone around you) wake up from this collective dream space, you may feel energized, startled, or even surprised.

“Oh, this is it? This is what’s happening? Is this real?”

There’s honesty and truth and maybe a difficult realization or three.

And then Aries wants to know, okay, so what are we going to do with all this?

Because Saturn in Aries is not resting, stagnant, silent or indifferent.

Saturn in Aries pushes, pushes, pushes, is testing, trying and shaking. Can we challenge conventions? Make new rules here?

I recently rewatched Heat Rivalry (spoilers below!) and it occurred to me that the plot change midway through episode 6 is representative first of Saturn in Pisces, with those dreamy, idyllic, isolated summer days together at the cabin, then of Saturn in Aries, once Shane’s parents show up and reality sets in, as well as the exchange of truths, honesty, and the need to consider new plans for the future.

Dry Clarity: Honesty About What It Is

The fire element demands movement, it pushes upward, it does not stop.

The doubly dry qualities of Saturn in Aries are illuminating, even if what is understood is not much. The gift of Saturn in Aries is to see things as they are, for better or worse.

Distance and separation are likely with Saturn in Aries, as healthy containment or separation. Of course, this can go too far, with fractures or disintegrations, along with the disintegration of structures and forms.

When I think of space and distance in this way, I think of the spaghetti arms scene (click up to 2.50) from Dirty Dancing, where Patrick Swayze’s character says, “Your dance space, my dance space.”

Instructions are given that each dancer must stay in their own space, and this is how the dance proceeds. Getting closer here doesn’t work.

This is Saturn in Aries: finding your own dance space. You own an area in which to move, activate and express yourself. And be aware of how your movements affect those around you.

With Saturn in Aries, you might consider how to take responsibility for your efforts while seeing how they contribute to the greater whole.

What is changing and clarifying within or around you as Saturn enters Aries?
