Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool, ending speculation that he could be a transfer target for Real Madrid.
Szoboszlai arrived at Anfield in 2023, having left RB Leipzig in a deal worth £60m (€70.5m), and has since established himself as a key player for the Reds.
He made 36 Premier League appearances under Arne Slot in 2024-25 as Liverpool became champions of England for the 20th time.
And although the Reds’ form dipped in 2025-26, with their fifth-place finish in the Premier League leading to the sacking of Slot and the appointment of Andoni Iraola, Szoboszlai remained consistent.
In all competitions, Szoboszlai recorded 25 goal involvements (13 goals, 12 assists) in 53 games; only Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister (both 55) played more frequently for Liverpool last season.
The Hungarian captain’s previous contract with the Reds was due to expire in 2028, opening the door to a possible move to Madrid if they could not agree new terms for next year, while Bayern Munich were also said to be interested.
But he has now committed his future to Liverpool, with reports suggesting his new contract, which the club only described as “long-term”, will last for five years.
“Maybe it’s my most important day. There are a couple of things ahead, probably when I signed for Liverpool for the first time and of course when I had my baby. But in my football career I can say it’s in the top three,” Szoboszlai told the club’s website.

“I can’t wait to come back again and again. There’s always more to come. I think I can do even better.”
“I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that’s what drove me since I was a kid: that I was never enough. And I’m thinking the same thing now.
“When I signed, I said I wanted to win it all. That didn’t change for a moment either.
“We remain the same: I want to win everything possible in this country, including the Champions League. I’m ready to do it.”
Liverpool open their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle United on August 23, with games against Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town, Fulham and Bournemouth before the first international break of 2026-27.
