If you are a digital nomad or location-independent business owner, you are either overpaying for piecemeal insurance coverage (travel, medical, etc.) or simply underinsured. You have a medical plan, travel insurance, and perhaps some medical evacuation coverage. But when you’re self-employed, you lack the kind of safety net protection you get at a corporate job. And you can’t use a country’s social safety net because, well, you’re not a citizen, right? You are wandering the world!
So what do you do?
The travel insurance company security wing is looking to change that. They always wanted to create this all-in-one package for digital nomads that includes insurance, employee benefits, and a social safety net.
I use their travel insurance all the time and they just launched what they call nomadic citizen that seeks to address coverage gaps.
What is the nomadic citizen?
nomadic citizen is an annual membership that combines medical coverage, travel protection, income protection and life insurance benefits in one plan. It’s for location-independent entrepreneurs and business owners who spend more than half the year outside their home country and whose lives and income cross borders by default.
Nomad Citizen covers you globally with no residency restrictions (except Puerto Rico).
Who can register?
nomadic citizen Covers people under 56 years of age and earning at least $4,000 USD per month. You register online, choose your start date, declare that you are in good health, and confirm that you will be outside the country of your passport for more than half the year. You can also add your partner and any children under 18 years of age.
But WHO Should you register? This is an interesting product. I definitely think there’s a niche for it. After all, let’s say you are an entrepreneur in Bali and you don’t have access to any social safety net. What happens if you get really sick or hurt and lose your job? A friend of mine in Mexico was hit by a car and seriously hospitalized and exhausted the limits of his travel insurance very quickly. Afterwards, she couldn’t work for months while in rehab and started a GoFundMe for help. A product like Nomadic Citizen would have helped. Or helped any of the other digital nomads who get injured on the road and have to raise funds.
I think this product is good for someone who lives in a country outside their own without access to social services or a strong social safety net. For example, if you live in Sweden and have access to all state benefits, this product is probably not for you because they have tons of services, but if you live in Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia or France but don’t have access to benefits, or are just wandering the world, have a high income, are self-employed or have a family, then this product would be something to consider.
How much does it cost?
For those who register on or after July 1, 2026, the nomadic citizen Membership costs $443 per month for those ages 18 to 39. If you are between 40 and 49 years old, it costs $665 per month and $875 per month for those between 50 and 55 years old. Children cost $143 per month (couples on the plan can add their first child under age 10 at no cost). You can pay monthly or annually.
A note on US coverage: Nomad Citizen is truly global, including the US, although it’s worth noting that the coverage limits were not designed for extensive use there… because, well, the US healthcare system is simply a disaster.
What is included?
Income Protection: The income protection benefit is probably the most compelling reason Nomad Citizen exists. Traditional income protection or disability insurance requires a fixed employer, a permanent address and residence in a specific country. Self-employed workers and sole traders working across borders are essentially uninsurable for loss of income through conventional schemes, such as government assistance.
If you’re a freelancer or remote worker and you lose your income (you get laid off, your contracts run out, or you can’t work due to a medical condition), Nomad Citizen pays you up to $4,000 per month for up to 3 or 6 months while you recover. That benefit doesn’t exist anywhere else!
Medical insurance: Up to $1.5 million in annual coverage for inpatient, outpatient, prescription, dental, vision, mental health, maternity, preventive care, wellness therapies and more. It’s like health insurance where you live and covers everything you need. It is much more robust than normal travel insurance, which only exists for emergencies.
Travel coverage: Trip delays, cancellations, theft of electronic devices, loss of luggage, evacuation, theft, family visits during hospitalization.
Parental leave: If you have a baby or become a legal guardian of a child, they pay you $4,000 a month so you can take time off work without worrying about money. There is a 3-year waiting period to access this benefit.
Long-term disability: If something really serious happens to you and you are forced to stop working permanently because, for example, you lose your eyesight, are diagnosed with cancer, suffer a major stroke, or can no longer do basic things like walk, dress, or feed yourself, you get paid $4,000 a month until you are 75.
Visa Assistance: Members can search and apply for versions of long-term visas from different governments designed for nomads (i.e. they can work on those visas) directly through our app interface without having to apply through government websites. They handle all direct communication with the government and verify the quality of your application before submitting it to maximize your chances of approval.
Nomadic care map: Find the best providers through its member database of over 4,000 healthcare providers worldwide, rated by service and English level.
Payment cards: Use your SafetyWing card to pay for covered services up to $500. This automatically generates a claim that has already been paid so you don’t have to wait for a refund. The SafetyWing Card is a global prepaid debit card sent to all Nomad Citizen members that they can use to pay for doctor appointments or prescriptions without using their own money.
24/7 human support: You’ll have access to live chat 24/7 so you can get a response from a real person in a few minutes.
All in one app: Claims, coverage details, customer support, provider search with Nomad Care Map, and visa assistance are managed through a single app. There is no need to switch between a health insurer, a travel insurer and an independent income protection provider (if one exists).
Make claims
For medical coverage, you pay out of pocket and request reimbursement or contact the team 24/7 to arrange direct payment with the provider. For travel claims, you collect documentation (police reports, carrier delay notices, receipts) and file a claim. To protect your income, you work with SafetyWing to verify the loss and provide evidence that you are actively seeking new income. Everything is managed through an app and they make it really simple and easy to do.
I love SafetyWing’s mission and use their travel insurance on all my trips. it’s new nomadic citizen The product is perfect for people who are full-time digital nomads and want some form of income protection, as well as more robust health and travel coverage and the type of social security programs you would get if you lived in one place. After all, when you’re a solopreneur, you worry about what happens if you get injured, can’t work, or have a child. It’s all up to you, right? Nomad Citizen is the program that ensures that you will no longer have to worry about these types of things.
