Kompany: “It’s a great gift to reach the DFB-Pokal final”

Vincent Kompany believes it is a “tremendous gift” to be able to play in the DFB Cup final after Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals.

Harry Kane and Luis Díaz scored for Bayern in a 2-0 win at the BayArena, as the Bavarian club reached its first DFB-Pokal final since 2019-20, when it won the competition.

It was a dominant display, as Kompany’s team produced 2.6 xG on 20 shots to Leverkusen’s 0.3 on four attempts.

Kane scored his seventh goal this DFB-Pokal season, the most by a player in a season in seven years (2018-19, Robert Lewandowski also seven).

Only Thomas Muller (eight in 2013-14) has scored more goals in a single edition of the competition this millennium.

This will be the first DFB-Pokal final for Kompany since taking charge of the club, an achievement that has not gone unnoticed by the Belgian coach.

“From day one everyone is talking about Berlin. Being able to bring the club back there is a great gift,” said Kompany.

“We played very well in the first half, with a lot of intensity, we didn’t allow them anything.

“Leverkusen entered the game better in the second half. They made us defend deeper, but we handled it well.

“We are enjoying this moment because it is about titles and we are still in the fight for everything.”

Bayern have already clinched the Bundesliga title this season, as they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final.

Kompany insisted they will not look beyond the league match against Mainz this weekend, despite the semi-final first leg against PSG fast approaching.

“In theory, we will move to Mainz, although we already have the title secured,” Kompany added.

“We have a clear routine on how we prepare for games. I don’t want to change the process because every game is important.”
