Nat on 13 says readers share their favorite walking trails: “I’m a teacher in Minneapolis and my school is a mile from where Renée Good was murdered. That cold January day she was murdered, I told my high school students what my route home would be, so they knew there would be an adult nearby if things got chaotic. Those weeks were filled with supporting students (those in school and those in hiding) through online teaching and the delivery of groceries. But another constant means of support was that daily walk to and from school. It started as a way to be present for my students, but ended up being a much-needed jolt to the system in the cold weather.
Wendy says of comforting a friend: “When my father passed away, I saw firsthand the grief-phobic culture we live in. Many people didn’t mention my loss because they were afraid they would make a mistake. But one night I was out with a friend who seemed nervous about broaching the topic of my father’s death. Finally, he shut up and asked me gently, ‘How does all this feel?’ At that moment he gave me permission to express myself and also admitted that he didn’t understand but that he was genuinely curious. “It was one of the most beautiful, humane and compassionate responses I received in those first six months.”
Sarah says in a milk chocolate taste test: “I’m a dark chocolate girl. I can’t eat added sugar, so for me it’s 100% cocoa, which is an acquired taste. This ad, where people compare themselves to each other on how dark their dark chocolate is, made me laugh.”
