A navy blue coat, a pink t-shirt, and olive green chinos walk into a bar. They get along great.

I’ve always loved work coats for spring. They solve that problem where a proper jacket is too much but just a t-shirt leaves you underdressed the moment the temperature drops or you enter somewhere with harsh air conditioning. A navy one like this is especially versatile because it reads almost like a casual blazer from a distance, but is much more forgiving in terms of fit and fabric weight.
What I find interesting about this set is how colorful it feels despite being made up of fairly discrete pieces. The pink t-shirt does a lot of heavy lifting there, but it’s not a saturated pink. It looks more like something sun-bleached or faded, which makes it much easier to use than it looks. I have a couple of t-shirts in similar shades and they end up in constant rotation because they pair so naturally with navy, olive, tan, gray, and basically anything earthy.
The olive green chinos here have a straight, relaxed fit, which I think is key. It helps the whole set visually combine.
The white AF1s and the canvas bag complete the outfit very well. White sneakers with olive green and navy blue are one of those combinations that I constantly return to because the white gives a special touch to the outfit. Without it, the paddle might start to feel a little heavy.
task coat
Three solid options at very different prices. It’s hard to argue with the Amazon Essentials version at $42 if you just want to try out the style, the Chef Works coat has a more authentic workwear weight and shape, and Huckberry’s Flint and Tinder splits the difference between a work coat and a blazer if you want something that’s a little easier to dress up.
T-shirt

Jerzees T-shirt$9.59/ Madewell Allday Garment Dyed Crew Neck T-Shirt$29.99 $40.00
A dusty pink t-shirt is one of those things that seems harder to sell than it really is. Once you try one, you realize it goes with basically everything you already have. Blank Jerzees are an inexpensive way to find out, and Madewell’s garment-dyed version will have that worn-in feel right out of the bag if you want to skip the break-in period.
Relaxed-fit olive chinos

Everlane Everyday Relaxed Fit Chino$83.00 $118.00 / Gap 90s Heavy Twill Baggy Khakis$47.97
The Everlane Everyday Chino has a nice, relaxed fit without being completely baggy, and the Gap Heavyweight Twill ’90s Loose has a little more room if you prefer. Either way, olive green chinos with a more relaxed fit are one of the most useful things you can have in spring. They work with virtually any top color except olive.
Knitted sneakers

Nike Air Force 1 Flyknit 2.0 Shoes$125.00 / Alt: authentic vans
The Flyknit version of the AF1 is a good option for spring and summer because it has the same shape but breathes much better. If you want something even simpler, a white Vans Authentic does the same job in an outfit like this.
