It was a memorable night for the Liverpool defender.
Ibrahima Konate was left speechless after scoring on his return to Liverpool following the death of his father as the Reds came from behind to beat Newcastle United 4-1.
Liverpool rose to fifth place in the first division table with an ultimately comfortable victory, although they were second best for much of the first half and fell behind when Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle a lead in the 36th minute.
However, two goals in the space of as many minutes from Hugo Ekitike turned the game around before the break.
Florian Wirtz then made it 3-1, but the biggest joy of the night at Anfield came when Konate took advantage of Nick Pope having lost a late Liverpool corner into his path.
Understandably, Konate couldn’t contain his emotions as he celebrated his goal and, speaking to TNT Sports after the match, he reflected on a night he will surely remember forever.
“I’m definitely very happy,” Konate said.
“I don’t have words to describe what I feel right now because it was a very difficult time for me and my family the last two weeks, but this is a part of life. It’s hard to accept that and we have no choice.”
“I know the team had some injured players and the coach on the call told me to take my time and not have to run back.
“With this [injury] In this situation it was important for me to come back and help the team. I did it today with the team at Anfield, the atmosphere today was incredible and this is what we need until the end of the season.”
