The deal, for an initial $750 million plus another $250 million from Uber tied to implementation milestones, marks a major expansion into robotaxis for the company founded by former Uber artificial intelligence chief Raquel Urtasun. It also feels like another Uber chip on the autonomous vehicle roulette table. With more than 20 audiovisual partners around the world, the question is not only whether Waabi can fulfill its plans to deploy more than 25,000 robotaxis, but whether Uber’s strategy of going all-in really works.
