I have a complicated relationship with the organization. This is true when it comes to my home, my time, and my life in general. The organization process does not bring me joy, but the functionality of an organized home and life is extremely beneficial for me. Over the years, I’ve picked up organizational tips and habits that work very well for me. Much of the most useful information I’ve found comes from one specific source: books.

Today I’m sharing three of the best books on organization that have helped me live a more organized life.

These books are accessible and full of practical advice. It’s not about seeking perfection, but about discovering what works best for you as an individual.

1. How to keep the house while drowning by KC Davis

$12

If you are at a point in your life where you are simply trying to survive or are going through a crisis, this is the book to read. It is also very helpful for people like me who have ADHD. KC’s organizing and cleaning tips are super realistic and accessible. She describes the act of organizing and cleaning as “morally neutral,” meaning that having a clean house (or not having one) does not make you a good or bad person. I find this mindset very useful. She is also an amazing person to follow on tiktok!

2. Four thousand weeks: time management for mortals by Oliver Burkeman

$15

This book is about discovering how to organize your valuable time by prioritizing and honoring the things that are most important to you. An excerpt from the book’s description reads: “Rarely do we make the connection between our daily struggles with time and the fundamental problem of time management: the challenge of how to best use our four thousand weeks. Drawing on the ideas of ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers, Oliver Burkeman offers an entertaining, humorous, practical, and ultimately profound guide to time and its management.” The premise of this book may seem a little bleak, but I’ve found that facing the reality of my limited time in life has helped me focus my true priorities. I am grateful that this book was recommended to me when it was.

3. Atomic habits by James Clear

$19

I have written about the power of this book for years and I started reading it again recently. This book is about defining the habits that will improve your daily life and better organizing your days around them. It has helped me identify the areas of my life where I am meeting my goals and the areas where I am falling short. It has helped me discover small ways to improve areas that fall into the latter category in a way that it’s not about perfectionism.
