Gayle King has been the face of CBS News CBS Mornings segment for more than a decade. However, it seems that his much-loved time on the channel will be coming to an end. The host is expected to leave the morning show next year. The news was shared by Variety on October 20, 2025 (ET). According to the news forum, four people with knowledge of the situation had shared the update.
Gayle King will leave CBS Mornings?
Gayle King could reportedly move into a different role within the news division, which is undergoing a major overhaul under the new Paramount Skydance regime. Sources revealed to the publisher that the anchor’s contract will expire in May 2026. While there are indications that CBS would like her to remain in the news division, potentially with a deal to produce her own programming for the network.
Gayle King’s speculative departure comes months later CBS Evening News Anchor Norah O’Donnell left that role in January 2025 and became a senior correspondent for CBS News, contributing to a variety of programs and coverage. Negotiations are about to begin just as Paramount is cutting ties with dozens of CBS News employees and hundreds more across the company.
Gayle King would be the latest major CBS talent to leave her current roles as corporate ownership of the company passes from the Redstones to the Ellisons, who have expressed a desire to steer CBS News away from content they feel leans too far to the left. Variety even shared a comment from the CBS spokesperson, who stated:
“There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract which runs through May 2026. She is a truly valuable part of CBS and we look forward to discussions with her about the future.”

Ellisons’ increasing control over Paramount forced CBS to make several changes
As the Ellisons become more powerful, Paramount and CBS have made significant changes. CBS canceled its signature late-night show. The last show with Stephen Colbert. The show will end in May 2026, before Paramount’s official sale to Skydance Media. The network will also part ways with John Dickerson, half of the current CBS Evening News anchor team. On October 30, 2025, CBS News said it would review its Saturday morning show and cut ties with its co-hosts Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson, as well as the show’s executive producer, Brian Applegate.
Lisa Ling and Nikki Battiste are among the other well-known employees who will be leaving. Amid all these massive changes, moving Gayle King would be a risky move for the network, especially since morning television is built on the relationships viewers share with hosts. If the public feels that Gayle was ousted for no good reason, they could be up for grabs by rivals like NBC. Today or ABC Good morning America. NBC News has faced this challenge twice over the years, as its audience did not like Deborah Norville when she became co-anchor of Today in 1989, because they perceived that she had clashed with previous co-host Jane Pauley.
