What to do in Bahrain
Where? Bahrain
Location? Bahrain is an archipelago of islands in the Middle East. I visited the main island, Manama, where the capital is located.
It is surrounded by the waters of the Persian Gulf. With Saudi Arabia to the west and south and Qatar to the east.
Because? I was invited on a press trip with Bahrain Tourism to come and sample some of the hidden gems that the island known as the “pearl of the Middle East” has to offer.
Announcement press trip

If you are looking for a new destination that is less commercial, more elegant and unspoilt than Dubai, don’t hesitate to try Bahrain! And it has year-round sunshine, gorgeous beaches, fantastic food and culture.
Where to stay?
We stay in The Four Seasons Bahrain and the Ritz Carlton Bahrain. For more luxury hotels in Bahrain click this link.

Bahrain is a destination that far exceeded my expectations. I loved the culture, the luxury experience, the traditional juxtaposed with the modern and the friendliness of the people!
For a holiday, I would recommend a few days, maybe 4 or 5 nights for a trip to Bahrain. It is a good amount of time to appreciate some of the local culture and also have the opportunity to relax in the beautiful luxury hotels.

What to do in Bahrain
Pearl Museum and Pearl Route
The Bahrain Pearl Route and Pearl Museum is a World Heritage site celebrating Bahrain’s economic history as one of the world’s largest pearl producers in the 19th century.
The area has been preserved and highlights the history of the region by showcasing the original oyster beds, buildings and a museum displaying some of the most beautiful pearl jewelry and artifacts in the world.

The whole area has a calm and serene atmosphere and a great way to spend the morning learning about Bahraini culture.
Also visit the basket weavers in this area to see this ancient artisanal tradition. Learn how weavers create basketry and also shop for beautiful crafts.

Sunset View and Boat Ride from Bu Maher Fort
Bu Maher Fort, in the pearl district, is a spectacular place from which to watch the Bahraini sunset over the water. Visit the fort to learn about the history or sail aboard one of the original pearl boats.

pearl diving
For those with an adventurous spirit, you can even pearl dive from one of the boats at the oyster beds with a local pearl diver. This trip is a lot of fun with the official divers who know the area and the best places to dive very well. No equipment is needed other than a snorkel.

Bahrain International F1 Racing Circuit
We had an exciting day at the Bahrain International F1 racing circuit. It started with a jeep safari and off-road experience that was not for the faint-hearted.
And then we were allowed access to the F1 racing circuit, the paddock and the stands. We visited the F1 Tower where we could see the complete circuit.
We also visited the hall of fame filled with photographs and memorabilia of the Formula One drivers who have driven the circuit. This is a must have for F1 fans.

Visit Al Manama Souk
Al Manama Souk, in central Bahrain, is the heart and soul of the country. Visit the bazaar area during the day and take the food tour to try some of the amazing local Arabic dishes with a guide.
Or visit at night, when locals shop and socialize. The souk is full of gift shops and craft boutiques. This includes everything from gold, spices, colorful fabrics to the magic lantern shops made famous on Instagram.

Visit the Al Fateh Grand Mosque
No visit to Bahrain is complete without a morning at the Al Fateh Grand Mosque. This incredible feat of Moorish architecture is not only a beautiful site to visit. It is also a fully functioning mosque and the religious heart and soul of Bahrain, where practicing Muslims come to pray and learn. You must be fully covered to enter, they provide tourists with appropriate clothing if necessary.

Dinner at Roka Restaurant
Bahrain is full of fantastic world-class restaurants from all over the world. One of the latest imports to Bahrain’s luxury dining scene is Roka.
This iconic Japanese sushi restaurant, as seen in London and Dubai, serves epic sushi, as well as DJs and vibes that will have you partying and dining into the wee hours of the morning, with Bahrain’s jet set.

Beach Days Solymar Beach Club
And let’s not forget the beach. For those looking for a party, beach club atmosphere, a la Ibiza, head to the Solimar Beach club. Here you can spend the day sunbathing, sipping cocktails by the sea, enjoying al fresco dining and dancing to DJs playing house music. We left our heels next to the sun loungers and spent the whole night partying, dancing on the beach.

And finally…
I love Bahrain as a destination that is home to everything from ancient traditions and culture to modern hotels, restaurants and beach clubs.
I had a lot of fun on this trip. I felt like I was back in Dubai, maybe 20 years ago, when it was less busy, the roads had less traffic but the activities and restaurants on offer are luxurious and modern. It’s a great new alternative to Dubai and Qatar.
