The vote came after newly released inflation data showed consumer prices rose in September at their fastest pace in eight months, and after the Senate voted to approve two separate resolutions led by Kaine to challenge the Trump Administration’s tariffs on goods from Canada and Brazil.
The US Senate voted 51-47 yesterday to approve bipartisan legislation introduced by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine and a few others to challenge President Donald Trump’s International Emergency Economic Powers Act tariffs on global imports. “With the holidays right around the corner, the damage created by these new taxes will only get worse,” Kaine said in an official statement.
“With the holidays around the corner, the damage created by these new taxes is only going to get worse. I am glad that the Senate fulfilled its constitutional duty to intervene in tax issues by voting to undo them. If the House does not take up this legislation, it will demonstrate that Republicans are okay with punishing American families and businesses with higher prices, fewer jobs and slower growth,” Kaine said in an official statement.
The National Emergencies Act states that the House of Representatives must vote on this legislation within 18 days.
Specifically, the legislation would end the emergency Trump declared to impose tariffs of up to 41 percent on imported goods.
In the wake of Trump’s tariff declaration, costs increased, manufacturers laid off thousands of workers and halted domestic investments, and foreign countries sharply reduced purchases of American agricultural exports, the statement added.
“From Japan to the European Union, Trump is hell-bent on imposing tariffs on our allies to ruin the American economy,” Wyden said.
“Americans across our country are bearing the cost of these tariffs, which are taxes that increase the price of food, electronics, clothing, strollers and other everyday goods. It is time for Congress to take back its power over trade so that Trump’s disastrous trade war comes to an end once and for all,” he said.
