QantasLink has signed a new three-year agreement with Devonport Airport in northwest Tasmania.
Flying Kangaroo, one of two passenger airlines operating flights to Devonport alongside Rex, will upgrade its lounge at the regional airport as part of the deal. QantasLink currently flies 46 times a week between Devonport and Melbourne using Dash 8 Q400s.
“Devonport is an important part of the Qantas network, and this investment in lounges is part of our commitment to ensuring customers have a great experience both on the ground and in the air when they fly with us,” said Rachel Yangoyan, CEO of QantasLink.
“Thousands of frequent travelers use the Devonport lounge each year, and this upgrade will make it more comfortable, modern and functional, whether passengers are traveling for business or pleasure.
“We are investing across Tasmania, with work underway on a new and expanded Qantas Club at Hobart Airport, new aircraft improving the flying experience to and from Apple Isle, and the relaunch of QantasLink flights from Hobart to Perth and Canberra, giving customers more choice.”
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kerry Vincent said the deal “will see improved amenities for travellers, improved reliability and greater activation of this regional gateway”.
“By ensuring Tasmania is more accessible than ever through air travel, we are setting ourselves up for success,” Minister Vincent said.
“We can achieve this by improving amenities for travelers, making air travel more accessible and, in turn, showing the rest of the world that we are truly open for business.
“It is through initiatives like this, as we work together to move our state forward, that we will see continued prosperity, particularly in our regions.
“Sustainable year-round flights in and out of Devonport open up business and tourism opportunities and provide certainty for more Tasmanians.”
The move comes as Devonport Airport progresses its 15-year Master Plan, which Anthony Donald, chief executive of operator TasPorts, said includes landscaping improvements, increased security and more sustainable fuel systems.
“Business travelers passing through Devonport Airport now have access to improved facilities, including new Business Hubs, designed to improve productivity and the travel experience,” he said.
“Our enhanced security measures further enhance security and streamline airport operations, and our enhanced visitor area within the departure lounge provides travelers with a more relaxed and comfortable environment during transit.
“These improvements reflect TasPorts’ ongoing commitment to supporting Tasmania’s connectivity and economic growth, ensuring Devonport Airport continues to meet the needs of business and leisure travellers.”
Qantas is also launching direct flights from Newcastle to Hobart, although its QantasLink base in the Tasmanian capital is one of three scheduled to close.
