Premier League report, result, goals

Two headers from Micky van de Ven and another from Pape Matar Sarr sent Tottenham third in the Premier League as Everton suffered their first defeat at their Hill Dickinson stadium.

Winger Van de Ven scored the first goal in the 19th minute when Rodrigo Bentancur sent a corner from Mohammed Kudus to the other side of the goal and saw a pass from Pedro Porro during first-half added time.

Jake O’Brien had Van de Ven’s goal tie disallowed, heading in before a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check determined that Iliman Ndiaye was offside and had fouled goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Sarr added the third with a minute left, heading in after Richarlison’s header put the Senegalese midfielder in space in front of goal.

Everton are next in action against fourth-placed Sunderland on November 3 (20:00 GMT), while Tottenham visit Newcastle in the EFL Cup fourth round on Wednesday (19:45) before hosting ninth-placed Chelsea on Saturday (17:30).

Everton vs Tottenham: Toffees’ streak ends

With Jack Grealish returning after failing to play against his parent club in their previous defeat at Manchester City, Everton made a bright start and found visiting goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in inspired form as they attempted to respond after falling behind 2-0.

Vicario made excellent saves to deny Beto’s overhead shot from close range and a deflected Ndiaye shot from outside the area, ending Everton’s five-match unbeaten run in all competitions to open their new stadium.

Spurs remain the only Premier League team yet to suffer an away defeat. “The second half was more of a dogfight, as it can be in the Premier League,” manager Thomas Frank told BBC Match of the Day.

“The season is very young. We won after [playing in] the Champions League and that is not easy to do.

“Set plays are crucial. We scored two very good goals and the boys competed excellently in our area.”
