Bankstown Airport owner Aeria Management Group (AMG) has secured approval for a new mixed-use development near the airport.
Commonwealth Government has approved AMG’s $80 million Birdwood Road mixed-use project Main Development Plan (PDM)which the operator says will provide “essential services, sustainability initiatives and business opportunities in south-west Sydney”.
According to AMG, the project, which is planned to include retail outlets, offices, warehouses and a childcare facility, will contribute around $110 million a year to the New South Wales economy and provide around 500 jobs once operational.
“This significant investment in world-class facilities and services at Bankstown Airport will deliver long-term benefits for south-west Sydney and beyond, including economic and employment growth, business opportunities and sustainability initiatives,” AMG chief executive Tom Smith said.
“We are proud to help meet the growing needs of residents and businesses for essential services, such as shops, offices, industrial warehouses and childcare.
“Thank you to the Commonwealth Government, our owner Aware Super, our partners and the community for their support as we continue to develop Bankstown Airport into the premier aviation and commercial hub in New South Wales.”
The news comes after AMG last month received government approval for the development of a new hangar to support general aviation operations, flight training and emergency services.
Part of the $60 million Bankstown Aviation Hangar Project Main Development PlanThe project will see the construction of two new hangars and associated facilities, supporting up to 10 GA operations in Sydney’s south-west region.
“The world-class hangar facilities will support critical general aviation operations, such as aeromedical and emergency services for metropolitan and regional areas,” Smith said in September.
In 2023, AMG flagged a $130 million investment in two major new infrastructure projects in Bankstown, including $50 million for a new aviation hub with up to nine new hangars, plus $80 million for a mixed-use precinct with commercial and industrial facilities.
The airport operator said it has invested more than $500 million in Bankstown and Camden airports over the past decade, including in “general aviation and key industries such as manufacturing, distribution and the retail and community sectors”.
AMG expects to begin construction of the Birdwood Road development in mid-2026, with work to be completed after 12 to 18 months.
