Navratri 2025 will be observed from September 22, 2025 to Wednesday, October 1, 2025. This is the Sharad Navratrithe most celebrated among the four Navratris in a year.

Ghatasthapana / Kalash Sthapana: The initiation ritual is underway September 22, 2025 in the morning (approximately between 6:09 am and 8:06 am local time) to enjoy a good muhurat.

Why is it called Sharad Navratri

  • the word Sharad half fall season in Sanskrit.

  • This Navratri falls on the Ashwin month (September-October) during the transition from monsoon to autumn.

  • Hence it is called Sharad Navratridistinguished from Chaitra Navratri (spring) and the less popular Magha and Ashadha Navratris.

  • It is also considered the Most powerful Navratriwhen Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

How to prepare for Navratri 2025

These are the main steps:

1. Ghatasthapana / Kalash Sthapana (Day 1 – September 21, 2025)

  • Set up a kalash (holy pot) filled with water, mango leaves and coconut.

  • Sow barley seeds in a clay pot, which symbolizes prosperity.

  • Turn on a Akhand Jyot (eternal lamp) during the 9 days.

2. Daily Puja Rituals

  • Offer flowers, fruits, sweets and prasad to Goddess Durga.

  • Recite Durga Saptashati either Devi Mahatmyam.

  • Every day we worship the respective Navadurga form (Shailputri to Siddhidatri).

3. Fasting and Discipline

  • Many devotees observe navratri fasts: eat only fruits, milk and sattvic food.

  • Avoid onion, garlic and non-veg foods.

  • Maintain purity in thoughts and actions.

4. Kanya Puja (Day 8 or 9)

5. Dussehra/Vijayadashami (October 2, 2025)

  • It marks the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana and the triumph of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura.

  • A time for new beginnings, learning and eliminating negativity.
