Mohanlal’s mother Santhakumari dies at 90
Actor Mohanlal’s mother Santhakumari passed away on Tuesday at her home in Ernakulam. He was 90 years old. The actor, who was filming in the city at the time, returned immediately after being informed of his death.

Santhakumari had been battling health problems for several years. About a decade ago, she suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed and confined to bed. After this, she was shifted to Ernakulam so that she could receive specialized treatment at a multi-specialty hospital. Since then, he has been receiving continuous medical care at home, and his condition has remained delicate over the years.

Family members said she had limited mobility after the stroke, but was cared for closely by her caregivers and family.

Santhakumari was the wife of Viswanathan Nair, who died earlier. He had two sons, Mohanlal and Pyarelal. His eldest son Pyarelal died in 2000. The family is expected to perform his last rites at his Thiruvananthapuram residence, and further arrangements will be announced.

Soon after the news broke, members of the film fraternity and several public figures began sharing condolence messages. Kamal Haasan posted a heartfelt note on social media that read, “Brother @MohanLal, only you can console yourself. Friends will support you like always. No consolation can compensate for a loss like this. Take care, we all love you. (Sic).”


Director B Unnikrishnan also expressed his sadness, remembering the warmth and care Santhakumari had shown him during his student days and noting the influence he had on Mohanlal’s life. Singer and close family friend MG Sreekumar shared his memories of their kindness and spoke about how lovingly they took care of her.

Several political leaders also conveyed their condolences, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer. Veteran actor Mammootty was among those who personally visited Mohanlal’s residence in Ernakulam to pay his respects.

Along with these messages, fans on social media platforms shared prayers and words of support for Mohanlal and his family, reflecting the widespread respect held for the actor’s mother.
