Milan regret ‘unfortunate’ loss to Parma as title hopes begin to fade

AC Milan assistant Marco Landucci believed a series of “unfortunate” events led to his team’s shock 1-0 defeat to Parma at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday.

Landucci, who was on the bench because Massimiliano Allegri was suspended, watched as Mariano Troilo’s 80th-minute goal sealed a 1-0 victory for the visitors.

With this result, Milan suffered defeat in Serie A for the first time since their defeat on the opening day against Cremonese, ending their 24-match unbeaten streak in the top flight (15 wins and 9 draws).

In fact, they also failed to score for the second time in the league this season, while it was the first time they failed to find the back of the net at home since April 2025.

But the match began when Ruben Loftus-Cheek was involved in a nasty collision with Edoardo Corvi and was forced to leave the match in the 11th minute.

Rafael Leao then hit the post before Troilo headed past Mike Maignan, with the goal initially disallowed for a foul on the Milan goalkeeper before referee Marco Piccinini overturned the decision following a VAR review.

“I think Serie A is the most difficult league in the world because it is very balanced and every match has hidden dangers,” Landucci told Sky Sport Italia.

“There are games that don’t go well for you. Today Gabbia was injured in the warm-up and we were forced to make a change at the last minute.

“Then Loftus-Cheek hurt himself immediately and suffered a bad blow. It was a bit of an unfortunate night.”

But, most importantly, Milan’s defeat made them lose ground compared to their rivals and the Serie A leader, Inter, with a difference now of 10 points between first and second place.

The Opta supercomputer has now assigned the Rossoneri just a 3.1% chance of lifting the title, while Inter has been given a 96.1% chance of victory in its season simulations.

“The team was disappointed, we tried to reassure them,” Landucci added.

“We must not think about the other teams, but about our own path, about getting as many points as possible. Our goal is to return to the Champions League.”

However, Milan had their chances in the match, registering 25 attempts for a total expected goals (xG) of 1.33, but only six of their shots were on target.

It was the first time they had attempted goals without scoring since April 2022, when they scored 33 against Bologna, much to Landucci’s chagrin.

“Obviously we are not happy,” Landucci added. “Parma played very well and the ball didn’t want to go in tonight.

“We wanted the three points, so of course we were disappointed, but we are going again starting Tuesday.”
