Manchester Airport installs biometric passenger identification

Manchester Airport has launched a new operating model at Terminal 2, allowing domestic and international passengers to share the same departure and arrival infrastructure. The system uses biometric identity reconciliation developed with Amadeus to manage the growing passenger volume within the existing terminal footprint.

The digital solution replaces traditional physical segregation, which the airport describes as “structurally inefficient.” By incorporating biometrics into the passenger journey, the airport confirms eligibility for specific zones without manual stops. Travelers within the Common Travel Area move fluidly through the site, while international passengers are directed to UK Border Force electronic gates or officer-assisted screening.

“By using biometrics to reconcile passenger identity across different types of journeys, we can use our space much more intelligently, reduce operational complexity and deliver a consistently high-quality experience for all passengers, while protecting the integrity of Border Force operations,” said CEO Chris Woodroofe. “With Amadeus we have been able to offer this model without compromise, balancing passenger experience, asset efficiency and the strict regulatory requirements of a UK international border.”

The platform processes tens of thousands of passengers each month with automated reconciliation rates approaching 99% and is now available to passengers flying with Aer Lingus, Aurigny, British Airways, easyJet and Loganair.

The airport claims operational and economic benefits, including increased capacity, improved commercial performance and greater returns from Manchester Airport’s £1.3bn transformation programme.

“Biometrics is not just about speeding up identity checks,” said Amadeus Vice President of AirOps Rudy Daniello. “They are becoming the foundation of a new generation of airport operations, where digital identity allows physical space to be used much more intelligently. Manchester Airport shows what is possible when identity management, infrastructure and regulation are designed together.”
