AI Sector Leads the Downside After Last Week’s Pump and Balancer Exploit Adds Pressure to the DeFi Market

The AI-focused crypto sector led the losses, falling 4.8% in the last 24 hours. Virtuals Protocol and ChainOpera AI each fell more than 10%, erasing last week’s momentum.

Bitcoin remained relatively stable compared to smaller currencies, hovering around $107,500 after briefly falling to $106,990. Ethereum fell below $3,800, although analysts say a break above $3,875 could trigger a brief squeeze. Liquidity remains plentiful on the sell side, keeping traders cautious.

In other categories, results were mixed. Dash was up more than 33% in the PayFi segment, Internet Computer (ICP) was up 20% among Layers 1, and zkSync rallied 30% in Layers 2 even though that sector overall fell almost 2%. Meme and DeFi tokens remained weak as traders pivoted to safer positions.

In breaking news, Balancer may have been mined for approximately $70.9 million in digital assets, according to Nansen. The movement of funds included 6,850 osETH, 6,590 WETH, and 4,260 wstETH to a new wallet flagged by analysts.

While Balancer has yet to confirm an official breach, on-chain experts have called the transfers “very suspicious.”
