Whether heckling opposing fans, blowing a referee’s whistle mid-game or delivering one-liners at press conferences, Jamie Vardy has always been one of football’s greatest characters.
And in his first interview as a Cremonese player, the 38-year-old forward showed exactly why.
Vardy, who joined the newly promoted Serie A side on a one-year deal after leaving Leicester City, was questioned about his age and motivation during his presentation.
“In Italy we are a bit skeptical about players like you who are approaching 40. We usually say: where is their motivation? What shape are they in? How do you respond to skeptics?” asked a journalist.
Vardy’s response was as accurate as his shot.
“You must be one of the doubters,” he snapped. “You’re someone I’m going to have to prove wrong.”
He added: “Age is just a number. As long as my legs continue to do exactly what they used to do and feel as fresh as before, I will keep going. At the moment there are no signs of slowing down, so I will keep going. I will give everything for this club.”
Cremonese, who defied expectations last season to gain promotion, have started brightly and sit top of Serie A after two games.
Vardy could make his debut this Saturday in a big clash at San Siro against Inter.
It’s time for Vardy to put his money where his mouth is, although if his career so far has taught us anything, it’s that the doubters should be worried.
“You must be one of those who doubt, you are one of those who I will have to prove wrong” 👀
