Jack DeJohnette died in a hospital due to health complications. He was taken to Kingston Hospital in New York, where he succumbed to congestive heart failure, his personal assistant, Joan Clancy, told the Associated Press. Jack was surrounded by his wife, Lydia (Herman) DeJohnette, other family members and close friends, according to an update shared by his management team. The two-time Grammy winner passed away peacefully after seeing his loved ones for the last time. The statement shared by Jack’s management team on his Instagram account can be read as:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jack DeJohnette. He died peacefully at Kingston Hospital, New York. He was surrounded by his wife, family and close friends. Jack was an NEA jazz teacher. His legacy will live on.”
Who was Jack DeJohnette? Why was it popular?
Jack DeJohnette (1942-2025) was an acclaimed American jazz drummer, pianist, and composer recognized for his versatility, innovation, and ability to combine styles. An NEA Jazz Master and multiple Grammy Award winner, he was celebrated for his work with some of the most iconic figures in jazz, including Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett. Jack DeJohnette replaced Tony Williams in Miles Davis’ live band in 1969 and became the lead drummer on the groundbreaking fusion album, bitch beer.
Jack’s drumming during this period was a key component of Miles’ electric-era sound, combining improvisational jazz with rock rhythms. For more than 25 years, Jack DeJohnette was a key member of a group, The Standards Trio, consisting of pianist Keith Jarrett and bassist Gary Peacock. The trio was one of jazz’s most beloved live acts, revitalizing the acoustic jazz tradition with new interpretations of classic songs. Throughout his long career, Jack released more than 50 albums.
Jack’s work demonstrated an impressive range, from the spacious improvisations of his band, Directions, to the more fun and colorful sound of his later groups, New Directions and Special Edition. Although best known as a drummer, he was also an educated pianist and sometimes recorded and toured using only that instrument. He began his musical career with piano lessons at the age of four.
Surviving relatives of Jack DeJohnette
The jazz drummer’s surviving family members include his wife, Lydia DeJohnette, and his two daughters, Farah and Minya. Jack was married to Lydia for 57 years and she was also his manager. Before marrying Lydia, he was married to Deatra Davenport, which ended in divorce. Jack was the only child of Jack DeJohnette Sr. and Eva Jeanette (Wood) DeJohnette. He had a half-sister named Izola, although her current status is unknown. Jack was legally adopted and raised primarily by his maternal grandmother, Rosalie Anne Wood.
