Javed Akhtar is a gem of Hindi cinema and started his career as a screenwriter, lyricist and poet. Javed Akhtar, winner of five national awards, was previously married to Honey Irani and had two children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani separated in 1978 and then he married Shabana Azmi on December 9, 1984.
Honey Irani reveals why she decided to split from Javed Akhtar
In a recent interaction with Vickey Lalwani, Javed Akhtar’s first wife Honey Irani opened up about her relationship with Javed Akhtar. She revealed that the early success in their relationship ruined their marriage. Since both she and Javed were young and navigating through life, and with sudden success, the relationship took a turn.
In the same interaction, Honey also revealed that Javed’s drinking was the most difficult issue in their marriage. Speaking about the same, he said:
“His alcohol consumption was a big problem. Then he met a lot of people, went out in the evenings, and those things escalated a lot in the meantime. We were both mature enough to understand that this wasn’t working. He had tried to stop drinking many times.”
Honey Irani reveals that the decision to split from Javed Akhtar was mutual
In her interview, Honey Irani said that she and Javed had mutually decided to part ways. Honey also claimed that she was too young and immature in the relationship. According to her, when the two saw their marriage falling apart, they decided that separating was the most sensible option.
Javed Akhtar felt guilty about his failed first marriage with Honey Irani
Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani met during the filming of Seeta Aur Geetawhere she was acting and he was on the writing team. Honey was attracted to Javed’s humble nature and wit. When Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar’s documentary series, angry young men, was released in 2024, the latter reflecting on his marriage to Honey.
In one of the segments, he revealed that he felt guilty towards Honey and added that he was 60 to 70 percent responsible for the failure of their marriage. Speaking about the same, he said:
“Honey is one person in the world, towards whom I feel guilty. And she is the only person. Sixty or seventy percent of the responsibility falls on my shoulders for the failure of that marriage. If I had had as much understanding as I have today, perhaps things would not have gone wrong. It is very difficult to accept, but that is what it is.”
