TL;DR

  • Google has introduced Gemini Labs, giving experimental features a clearly labeled home within the Tools menu.
  • A new Personal Intelligence toggle lets you prevent Gemini from using data from connected apps in that chat.
  • The update follows previous sightings of behind-the-scenes labs and appears to be currently limited to the Gemini web app in select regions.

Google has long used Google Labs and Search Labs as a way to give users early access to features that are not yet finished. With Gemini evolving so quickly, it always seemed like it was only a matter of time before he received the same treatment. Right on cue, Gemini Labs finally made an appearance, after we saw signs of it coming behind the scenes in recent months.

As 9to5Google As seen, Google has started showing a dedicated Labs section within the Gemini web app, giving experimental features a clearly marked home rather than mixing them in with everything else. The Labs area is located within Gemini’s Tools menu and is marked with the familiar Google tumbler icon. It groups together features that are still actively being developed, such as the Agent and Dynamics view, making it clear what is stable and what is still a work in progress.

Within that Labs section, Google has also added a new Customize Intelligence option. It has an explanation that will “personalize chat when useful” and controls whether Gemini can get context from its connected Google apps. The setting applies only to the current conversation and is enabled by default, meaning you opt out of the personalization if you toggle it. When you start a new chat, the switch automatically resets to that default state.

To make room for Labs, Google has subtly reorganized the Tools menu. Core features like Deep Research, Nano Banana, and Deep Think are now in a standard Tools section, while Labs is clearly separated as an experimental space.

This lines up with what we’ve been seeing behind the scenes for months. In previous APK teardowns of Gemini and Gemini Live, we spotted multiple references to Gemini Labs, suggesting that Google was preparing a central location for opt-in experiments. Those findings included hints at advanced Gemini Live features and other capabilities in development, and we’re waiting to see if Google is ready to make them official.

For now, it appears that the Labs section and Personal Intelligence switch are only available in certain regions in the Gemini web app, and the mobile versions do not change. We will no doubt see it offered in all regions and platforms in due time.
