Elon Musk wants you to know that Sam Altman received a refund for his Tesla Roadster

Elon Musk and Sam Altman still attack each other on Musk’s X social media platform.

While both men were founders of OpenAI, where Altman is CEO, they subsequently clashed on social media, court filings, and corporate blog posts. The last exchange began when Altman published what he called “a story in three acts,” with screenshots showing he reserved a Tesla Roadster in 2018, then recently tried to cancel it and request a refund of his $50,000 reservation fee, only to have his email bounce.

“I was really excited about the car!” altman wrote. “And I understand the delays. But 7.5 years seemed like a long time to wait.”

The second-generation Roadster sports car was first announced in November 2017, but has been repeatedly rejected, with Musk (Tesla CEO) recently saying that A new version will be released later this year.

Musk responded for the first time to Altman’s post writing“You robbed a nonprofit,” a criticism that directed at Altman and OpenAI before, not just in tweets, but also with lawsuits and takeover bids seeking to hinder OpenAI’s attempts to restructure itself as a for-profit company (a process OpenAI recently completed, with its nonprofit arm still retaining control over the for-profit public benefit corporation).

Musk even started a rival AI startup, xAI, which is suing OpenAI and Apple over allegations that the two companies are colluding to stifle competition. (Altman called the allegation “remarkable…given what I’ve heard claims that Elon manipulates X to benefit him and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn’t like.”)

In addition to repeating his criticisms of Altman and OpenAI, Musk also suggested today that Altman’s screenshots don’t tell the full story: “And you forgot to mention act 4, where this issue was fixed and you received a refund within 24 hours. But that’s in your nature.”
