China’s energy consumption rises 4.5% in September, indicating steady growth

China’s electricity consumption, a key indicator of economic activity, continued to grow steadily in September. Energy consumption increased 4.5 percent year-on-year to 888.6 billion kilowatt-hours, according to data published by the National Energy Administration (ANE).

Consumption in primary and secondary industries increased by 7.3 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively, while the tertiary sector recorded an increase of 6.3 percent.

China’s electricity consumption rose 4.5 percent year on year in September to 888.6 billion kilowatt-hours, reflecting stable economic activity, according to the National Energy Administration. Energy use in the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors grew by 7.3, 5.7 and 6.3 percent, respectively, while residential consumption decreased by 2.6 percent.

However, residential electricity use fell 2.6 percent to 128.7 billion kilowatt-hours. During the first nine months of 2025, total energy consumption reached almost 7.77 trillion kilowatt-hours, an annual increase of 4.6 percent.
