The new “from Australia”“solar sharing” program will provide homes in New South Wales, South East Queensland and South Australia at least three hours of free solar energy every day from 2026, even for those without roof panels. Other areas will possibly follow in 2027. The Guardian reports: The government said Australians would be able to program appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and air conditioners and charge electric vehicles and home batteries during this time. The solar share plan would be implemented through a change to the default market bid that sets the maximum price retailers can charge customers for electricity in some parts of the country. Energy and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen said the scheme would ensure “every last ray of sunshine powers our homes” rather than wasting some solar energy.
Australians have installed more than 4 million solar systems and there is regularly a glut of cheap generation in the middle of the day. Part of the rationale for the program is that it could shift electricity demand from peak hours, particularly early evening, to sunnier hours. This could help minimize peak electricity prices and reduce the need for grid upgrades and intervention to ensure the power grid is stable.
