KITE
The graph below shows an unusually accurate ‘Comet’ formation at the Full Moon on August 9 at 07.55 UT. It began to align on August 1, with Mars still in late Virgo, falling into place as it enters Libra on August 6. In general, this pattern is not unusual, but this one certainly is because…
- All the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are exactly involved. This last occurred between 1944 and 1947, but the pattern never reached this level of accuracy.
- Back then, in early February each year, when the Sun and the fastest-moving planets were in Aquarius, a similar comet formed in opposition to Pluto.
- Saturn is now involved as well, aspecting them all and opposing Mars.
- The pattern involves five planets, rather than the “prototype” four.
What are we going to do with this?
Out in “the world”, the cards are already on the table. However, the nature of the game being played and indeed the players in the room are still open to conjecture. Be prepared for surprising turns of events, setbacks and escalations…but be on the lookout for ‘hidden miracles’ as well.
The last time this Kite appeared, borders were redrawn, treaties were signed, mass human casualties occurred, international organizations were created… the list goes on and sounds familiar… and…
Remember that what we see in the global political sphere will largely represent the dense energies evoked by power, greed and control, in resistance to the transpersonal energies of the outer planets, whose movements catalyze and nourish our spiritual maturation and life development.
From an inner perspective, the astrological ‘Comet’ shows a Grand Trine of Air (here Mars, Pluto, Uranus) with the Uranus-Pluto side bifurcated by sextiles to Saturn-Neptune in Aries (Fire). They, in turn, are opposite Mars. The trine aspect is a free-flowing energy between planets/signs that can relate harmoniously, but can also express itself as compulsiveness and escalation. An “opposition” sometimes manifests itself precisely like this, but its process is actually one ofawareness.

Kites have brought joy, fun, and joy to humans around the world for millennia, and several cultures claim to have invented them. They use natural aerodynamics, but require a human anchor on the ground to both launch them and keep them in the air, navigating air currents.
Look at the top of the picture and see where the guide rope is attached. Coinciding with the previous astrological chart, Saturn is the only physically visible planet in this group: it maintains the boundary between personal and transpersonal energies. So Saturn may be the key to allowing this comet formation to stir the soul, helping us stay grounded as our spirit soars.
What could this look like?
Howards Sasportas used to say that our job is to “improve” the way the astrology of our chart is experienced and expressed. Following your advice right now, perhaps we can embrace our own density, resistance, and fear with some positive Saturn. There is some hesitation with Saturn in Aries, perhaps amplified by the opposition to Mars. By avoiding the temptation to force things, we can fruitfully harness the energy of the Hermit, the solitary figure of the Tarot who carries the Light. In the privacy of our inner sanctuary, we can release the desire to take control where it is not necessary. And watch and wait, taking only those actions that are necessary or to which we are called by conscious choice, not by obligation. Above is a third type of kite, a raptor that we could perhaps invite to be our “spirit animal” during this time. May we fly freely, with safe vision and farsightedness like the Red Kite above, and also prosper as it has. Kites are scavengers that clean carrion: they “order” the environment and are therefore associated with purification and the underworld. In the late 1980s this beautiful bird was on the ‘endangered species’ list in the UK, but is now thriving thanks to a successful reintroduction program. This started in 1990, right after During the last conjunction of Saturn and Neptune!
