Atlético coach, Diego Simeone, apologizes to Vinicius Jr after making fun of the Real Madrid winger

Diego Simeone is known for his antics on the wing, but he crossed the line against Real Madrid.

Atlético de Madrid coach Diego Simeone apologized to Vinicius Jr and described his mocking behavior towards the Real Madrid winger as “unacceptable”.

Simeone and Vinicius fought a tough battle during the Spanish Super Cup semi-final last Thursday, a match that Madrid won 2-1.

The Argentine told Vinicius that Madrid was going to “get rid of him,” according to images captured by Movistar, and then put his hand to his ear as if to emphasize the hostile reception that the Jeddah crowd gave him when the Brazilian international was sent off in the second half.

Vinicius took offense to Simeone’s actions and shouted a response before a mini-fight broke out between the two coaching staffs on the touchline.

Speaking ahead of Atlético’s Copa del Rey clash with Deportivo La Corona tomorrow night, Simone told a press conference: “First of all, I would like to apologize to [Madrid president] florentine lord [Perez] and Mr. Vinicius for the incident they witnessed.

“It was obviously not right of me to put myself in that position, and I accept that it was clearly not acceptable.”

Simeone is known for his enthusiasm on the sideline and his Madrid counterpart was unimpressed by his antics in Saudi Arabia.

After the match, Xabi Alonso stated: “I don’t like what happened at that moment.

“I saw that Cholo said something to him. For me these types of things cross the line of respect towards a professional colleague. I don’t like it when someone says things like that to my teammates. I always try to respect the opposing players. Not everything goes.”

Madrid advanced to the final, which they lost 3-2 to Barcelona yesterday.
