Alex Honnold, an American climber, has managed to free solo climb the Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, the tallest urban free solo climb in history. He rose to global fame in 2017 when he became the first person to solo a full route on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, a climb described in The New York Times as “one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind that ever existed.”
Born on August 17, 1985 at 2:19 in the morning in Sacramento, California, he started climbing in a gym at the age of five.
In 2016, he underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging scans that revealed that, unlike other high sensation seekers, his amygdala barely activates when he looks at disturbing images. The amygdala acts as the brain’s threat detection center and regulates fear, aggression and anxiety, triggering rapid “fight or flight” responses. He confesses to feeling afraid at times. Through imagination and practice, he has become desensitized to the most terrifying situations.
