POLICE are investigating a possible new suspect in the infamous murder of British student Meredith Kercher.
The person in question fled Italy days after the murder of the 21-year-old in Perugia (18 years ago today in 2007), according to the former prosecutor in the case.
Giuliano Mignini, who led the original investigation, has proposed the name of a new suspect, according to La Stampa.
He told the newspaper: “There are indications that this person may be involved. It’s someone I’ve never considered before.”
No decision has been made on whether to formally reopen the investigation.
Meredith, from London, had her throat slit at the Italian villa she shared with Amanda Knox in Perugia, where she was on an exchange from the University of Leeds.

AT THE STAND
Meredith Kercher’s murderer will be tried for “sexual assault” on her ex
Rudy Guede, from the Ivory Coast, was convicted in 2008 of murdering and sexually assaulting her after his DNA was found at the scene.
He was released from prison in 2021 after serving 13 years of a 16-year sentence.
Amanda Knox, Meredith’s American roommate, was also convicted of murder along with her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, but was later completely exonerated.
In a dramatic saga, the couple were acquitted in 2011, convicted again in a retrial in 2014 and then finally acquitted in 2015.
They each spent around four years behind bars before being fully acquitted.
Knox said last year that she had been “wrongfully accused for 17 years” and had not killed anyone.
She was also convicted of defamation against her former boss, Patrick Lumumba, for wrongfully accusing him of murder, and this was confirmed earlier this year.
The Congolese owned a bar where Knox, then a university student, had worked part-time.
He was arrested and spent two weeks in jail before being released after Knox said in a police interview that he was the culprit.
Guede will stand trial this month on separate charges of sexual assault against his ex-girlfriend.
He began dating a woman while in prison, until she ended the relationship in 2023 and pressed charges.
The case made headlines again this summer when a new eight-part drama series was released chronicling Amanda Knox’s journey through the courts.
Explores the protracted process of finding the truth and the frenzy of public speculation that surrounded the case.
In March this year, Knox urged Meredith’s grieving family to buy her new book, prompting accusations that she is profiting from the tragedy.
His new memoir, Free, is about the treatment he received while in prison.
In the book, she claims that they groped her and asked her for sex. prison guards.
When asked about the impact the book could have on her former roommate’s family, Knox urged them to read it.

She said: “I hope you read my book because I really honor Meredith’s memory in the book, but I also believe that honoring her past and her story doesn’t mean erasing mine.
“I am a person who continues to seek justice in this case, but a bigger issue that I try to talk about and free myself from is how we overcome the traumas in our lives, regardless of whether or not we get what we deserve.”
