Hello loves!
The title of this post might have intrigued you a little; Well, I’m talking about the “reformed shopaholic” part. If you’ve been a part of my blogging journey for the past few years, you may have noticed that my shopping habits change over time. If you are new to my blog, I will give you a brief introduction that I was a shopaholic and above all an impulsive buyer.
But over the years, not only have I evolved as a person, but my shopping habits have also changed considerably. It’s not that I don’t shop anymore, but I make practical purchases. And that’s why I thought I’d share today my thoughts on how to avoid a bad purchase or a bad shopping day, as I’m sure each of us has had a bad shopping day more than once.
There are certain times when you come home from a big shopping trip, open your shopping bags, and immediately think, “Why did I buy this? What was I thinking?” – Well, that’s what you call a bad shopping day, and in this post I will share some instant tips on how to be a smart shopper.
- Prepare a basic shopping list
I’ve found that the best way to avoid unnecessary purchases and stick to your budget is to have a shopping list ready with you. I usually have a list ready for each season, considering that wardrobe needs can change with the seasons. Here, I have prepared a sample wardrobe shopping list that you can refer to:
Keep a similar list on your phone every time you go shopping, and if you think you already have enough items shown on the list, you don’t need to spend money on buying unnecessary clothes or shoes.
- Wait overnight before selecting ‘PAYOUT’ in your online shopping cart
Aren’t we all guilty of making those impulse purchases online as soon as we see an ad about a 1-day deal or a free product? Well, I was probably one of those people who got excited to see these types of offers and placed orders in an instant. And sometimes, a lot of online orders arrived at my house that I had completely forgotten about.
But once I realized that my closet was overflowing with clothes and makeup that I barely wore, I knew I had to put an end to impulsive online shopping. Now, whenever I see an amazing deal from a brand I like, or have the urge to shop online (I add the products I like to the shopping cart, but before clicking Checkout), I decide to wait a day and wait a day. And believe me, the next day I end up realizing that the things I wanted to choose weren’t that important.
- Go shopping with a clear head
Most of us end up making impulse purchases usually after a breakup, a bad day at work, or a fight with friends or family. Not only do you end up making bad decisions, but you also end up accumulating things that you later realize you would never have chosen if you had been in your right mind.

So next time you think about shopping after a bad day, go grab some hot chocolate, it’s super relaxing and will only cost you a few dollars instead of a long shopping bill.
My friends and I follow this religiously and it has worked wonders for us to not only control my urge to shop all the time but also save a lot of money as all brands put their collections on sale within 2 months of launch. So, if you are not in a hurry to renew your wardrobe or choose your favorites among the new products, wait for the sales, when almost all major brands have offers of up to 70% off.
And if you know exactly when the sales start (you can maintain an account through Facebook and Instagram, and also by following your favorite bloggers who know about these sales before they go live), you can end up saving a lot of money.
- Invest in Capsule Wardrobe Essentials
Now this is something I’ve learned over the last few years. Instead of buying every new trend that comes out every season and soon becomes obsolete; It is better to invest in statement essentials like a Louis Vuitton bag or a statement watch that are here to stay for a long time and that you would reach for very often compared to your trendy jute bag or silicone strap watch.

These essentials are not only the foundation of a classic wardrobe, but will also be a mainstay of your wardrobe; thus making it easier and chic to get dressed every day.
