The death of an eight-year-old boy remains a mystery after his father’s ex-girlfriend discovered his body at the edge of a pond.

Police have made no arrests three weeks after Fabian was tragically found dead in a forest near Klein Upahl in northern Germany.

The young man, from Güstrow, south of the city of Rostock, was reported missing on October 10 after failing to return home.

Police launched a large-scale search operation to find the eight-year-old boy, whose body was found four days later by his father’s ex-girlfriend.

Authorities later said it could be “assumed someone else was responsible.”

The strange events surrounding the boy’s disappearance have sparked widespread speculation about the cause of his death, as investigators believe he was the victim of homicide.

In an interview with Nordkurier, her mother revealed that she had “a bad feeling” and immediately suspected foul play; concerns, he says, that police downplayed.

In the days following his disappearance, hundreds of search workers were deployed to locate the missing child.

The researchers conducted extensive interviews in the city, questioning neighbors and members of the Fabián school staff.

According to criminal expert Axel Petermann, statistically child homicides are caused by someone in the family.

He told Bild: “When a child is killed, the search for clues usually begins in the child’s immediate environment.”

It was also alleged that a man was seen trying to talk to a primary school boy at the time of Fabian’s disappearance.

According to Petermann, “if a stranger talks to another child nearby, the police should try to identify that person.”

“That is a clue that must be followed,” he added.

It is still unclear whether investigators have followed up on the trail, and their silence has fueled even more speculation.

But according to criminology professor Christian Matzdorf, the secrecy surrounding the case will likely protect the investigation, as the situation “can change at any time.”

Authorities have not confirmed who they are investigating, but Petermann suggests the perpetrator must have been in a hurry since the boy’s body was found hidden, not buried, in the woods.

Last Thursday, a team searched a container for evidence of a weapon, while emergency services combed the area with shovels and metal detectors.

The investigation by the Rostock prosecutor’s office continues and so far no arrests have been made.

In a statement, officials said: “At this point, we again ask for your understanding that details of the investigation cannot be released at this time.

“The only reason for this reluctance is that the ongoing investigation should not be hampered or complicated by premature press releases.”

They also urged the public to refrain from speculating about the case.

A memorial service for Fabian was held in Güstrow yesterday, two weeks after a staggering 700 people gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember him.

Residents have been placing candles, stuffed animals animalsand other items in front of the church.

Mayor Zimmermann said the incident left the entire city in shock.

Fabián’s mother has since requested that her son’s photograph be used in the press, in an attempt to keep his memory alive.

She said: “It should not be forgotten and should remain in people’s minds.”
