American travelers are ready to try something new.

Airbnb recently released its winter travel report for the 2025/2026 season, and this year Americans won’t be sticking to the usual haunts. Overwhelmingly, American travelers are turning to under-the-radar destinations for winter sports and non-traditional beachfront getaways for their warm-weather plans. Families are leading this trend, with 80 percent opting for suburban or rural vacations, according to the Airbnb report.

Instead of the big-name resorts of the West, skiers are looking to enjoy small-town charm and easy slopes. There is a surge in interest in Dover, Vermont, home to the state’s southernmost big mountain, Mount Snow. It is one of the most easily accessible winter destinations for travelers living in the major cities of the Northeast.

Campton, New Hampshire, also draws travelers to New England with a mix of outdoor snow adventures and secluded rest and relaxation. Many skiers also venture to Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands to experience its wonderful winter season: Located near Seven Springs Ski Resort, the welcoming town of Champion has been attracting attention as families make travel plans.

While it’s no surprise that winter sports continue to draw many travelers out West, two not-so-overlooked destinations seem to be emerging into the spotlight. Brighton is one of the lesser-known ski resorts near Salt Lake City, but it still offers tons of powder and exciting terrain. Meanwhile, McCall, Idaho, can now boast its trending status, along with a famous winter carnival and famous snow conditions.

When it comes to travelers looking to escape the winter chill with warm-weather getaways, vibrant swamp towns have become a vacation favorite. Lafayette, Louisiana attracts visitors with its acclaimed Cajun food, festive cultural celebrations, and a lively music scene. About an hour’s drive from New Orleans’ French Quarter, St. Tammany Parish is another great option for travelers looking for a culturally rich and sunny trip.

There’s no shortage of beautiful beaches to consider when planning a Florida vacation, but Anna Maria has been pulling ahead of the competition in the Sunshine State. South of Tampa and north of Sarasota, this small island town has low-key energy and pristine beaches. Another hidden gem on the Gulf Coast, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, is equally historic and sunny for those who need a pick-me-up in the dead of winter.

The honor of being the only West Coast destination to make the list goes to Hermosa Beach, California. The Southern California location is gaining popularity with a vibrant surf culture and refreshing weather that brightens travelers’ winter days.

Families opting for longer trips was another growing trend revealed by the Airbnb report. Company data shows that one-third of families traveling this winter plan stays of seven nights or more. Travelers ages 60 and older are also opting for extended trips, with most heading out to enjoy Florida’s sandy beaches and sunshine.
