Brendan Rodgers resigns as Celtic manager and Martin O’Neill returns to the club as caretaker manager

Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Hearts, with former manager Martin O’Neill returning to the club as caretaker manager.

Rogers returned to the club for a second spell in 2023, winning successive titles in addition to his 2017 and 2018 league triumphs.

The Hoops are eight points behind surprise Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts in the table, having won just five of their nine league games so far.

As a result, the mood at Parkhead had turned sour this season and Rodgers was expected to leave when his contract expired next summer. Now, that decision to leave was made less than 10 games into the season.

A statement from the club said: “Celtic Football Club can confirm that football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation. It has been accepted by the club and Brendan will leave his position with immediate effect.

“The club appreciates Brendan’s contribution to Celtic during his two highly successful spells at the club.

“Brendan leaves Celtic with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club and we wish him further success in the future.

“The process to appoint a new permanent manager is underway and the club will inform its supporters of this as soon as possible.

“We are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic’s first team affairs. Further details will be confirmed shortly.”
