Kate Spade Japan Lucky Bag (Fukubukuro 2021) worth 170,000 yen – Unboxing and Review | The Shopaholic Diaries
Hello everyone!

I hope you’re having a great start to 2021.

2020 had been a difficult year for many of us and, moving to a new country, I also took a seemingly long break from blogging as I tried to settle into this new culture and environment.

However, I hope this year will be much better and I finally decided to start blogging again. While I have a lot of content to share about my life in Japan and my fashion diaries; I decided to start this blog where I am going to talk about one of my recent purchases that is also a popular New Year’s tradition in Japan.

I am referring to the ‘Fukubukuro’ or lucky bags that are available in the first week of January every year in Japan. Lucky bags are surprise bags offered in many supermarkets, brands and department stores in Japan and consist mainly of latest season products with incredible discounts.

I talk more about lucky bags and how this tradition started in my post for Tokyo Weekender which you can check out here.

So, this year I bought three lucky bags; the first was from the designer’s brand. Kate Spade.

Here are some images, an unboxing video and more details about the Kate Spade 2021 lucky bag:

Kate Spade launched this lucky bag on its website in December in five versions, but did not reveal the contents of each bag. The only detail I knew about the lucky bag is that it will have 5 items in total between bags, wallets and/or accessories. Each lucky bag was priced at 30,000 yen plus tax and each customer could only purchase one lucky bag at a time.

The lucky bags finally shipped on December 31st and I finally received mine a few days ago.
Here is the content of the lucky bag I bought:

1. Shoulder bag: A cute red crossbody bag that has an external pocket and an internal pocket with a small interior that can fit a wallet, keys and a phone.

2. Satchel Bag: A structured black satchel that comes with an additional long strap and can be carried two ways. The interior is quite spacious and can even fit an iPad or a small laptop with ease.

3. Canvas Bag: A canvas bag with leather handles that can be styled in two shapes and also comes with an extra long strap.

4. Cosmetic bag: A small transparent bag that can mainly hold a few lipsticks or can even be used as a case to store your mask.

5. Bracelet: A leather bracelet in a beautiful shade of olive green that has the cute Kate Spade logo padlock.

While the items did not have their original tags, they did come with the original dust covers (except the crossbody bag) and care tags. I was pleased to find the bags in excellent condition and of excellent quality, as I had often heard that brands tend to give away old or unwanted stock in these lucky bags. But the contents I received were in perfect condition and a couple of bags are from the latest collection and are still sold on their website.

According to the brand, the total cost of the lucky bag is 170,000 yen, which seems legitimate since the bag alone costs between 60,000 and 70,000 yen. The only item in the lucky bag that I wasn’t very happy with is the green tote bag, as it’s a color I don’t normally prefer in my closet.

However, I think this was a great way to pick up some new bags from the brand without having to spend a huge amount. And since you can’t see the contents of the lucky bag beforehand, it’s fun to try your luck and wait to see if you’ve gotten some nice items.

What do you think of this new year trend? Did you also buy a lucky bag this new year?
