Cinemark Is Adding More 70mm IMAX Screens Ahead of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

The movie industry has been in a tailspin for years, with many people forgoing the theatrical experience to watch movies at home. I understand. Going to the movies can be expensive and, let’s be honest, interacting with other people can be annoying (it’s been 10 years and I’m still angry at those teenagers who couldn’t stop laughing the first time I saw the witch). But there’s nothing like going to the movies and getting lost for a couple of hours watching a great movie. Additionally, large-format formats are gaining popularity and movie theater chains are trying to accommodate moviegoers.

Cinemark is installing more IMAX screens, including some that support 70mm film projection. The company is adding these types of displays to its locations in Woodridge, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago); Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Rochester, New York. It will also add four IMAX systems with laser (a 4K laser offering) to other locations in the US in the coming months. It is also upgrading its other 12 IMAX screens in America with that technology.

According VarietyCinemark plans to have the new 70mm IMAX movie screens installed by July 17, 2026. That’s the release date of Christopher Nolan’s next film. The Odyssey, which is the first theatrical release filmed entirely in IMAX. Currently, only 30 movie theaters on the planet can show films in IMAX 70mm, which is Nolan’s preferred format.

IMAX is proving popular with moviegoers looking for a large-format experience that would be impossible at home (at least not without a smutty private screen). In fact, many 70mm IMAX screenings The Odyssey sold out one year in advance.

IMAX 70mm is not the only format with limited availability that draws audiences to theaters. Paul Thomas Anderson One battle after another It is the first film in 60 years to be shown in the VistaVision format, but only in a few places. The film is also currently showing in IMAX 70mm in some theaters.
